View the project findings

Thank you for your interest in improving walking and cycling in Winchester. Your contributions to this project have been vital to help understand the following:

  • the main issues that discourage people from walking and cycling more in their neighbourhood;
  • streets and roads where severance (crossing the road) is difficult;
  • which streets experience rat-running traffic trying to avoid traffic queues on main roads;
  • the locations where vehicles appear to be driving above the speed limit; and
  • barriers to active travel on the key routes into and around the city.
  • Key findings

    The main issues identified with walking and cycling facilities in and around Winchester which discourage residents from travelling more actively were:

  • poor quality of existing facilities (both cycle paths and pavements);
  • lack of cycle routes, especially leading to key locations such as the leisure centre;
  • lack of space for cyclists and pedestrians;
  • disconnected cycle routes and paths;
  • a need for additional continuous and segregated cycle paths;
  • concerns about traffic speeds; and
  • the desire for improved pedestrian crossings and footways.
  • The issue of severance (difficulties crossing the road) was most frequently raised on Jewry Street, Bridge Street, and Romsey Road.

    Rat running was most frequently raised as an issue on St Georges Street and Hyde Street.

    The issue of speeding vehicles were most frequently raised on London Road, North Walls, Jewry Street, Chilbolton Avenue and Romsey Road.
